Scarlet no more. The final remains of Meg Cabot
Forty-year old mystery unearthed

Forty years ago, the day before her wedding, 24-year old Meg Cabot was walking her dog. It was a sunny day, June 15th. She stopped down the block to talk to Julie Bower, one of her friends, about how excited she was to be married. A dream come true. She waved goodbye and headed off to the 500 block of West Grand Avenue.

That was the last time Meg was ever seen.

The mysterious case became known among Chicago cops as “The Scarlet Mystery,” because of Meg’s bright red hair. For years, witnesses claimed to see Meg’s ghost wandering the streets in search of her dog. It remains one of the city’s great unsolved mysteries, but no one knew for sure whatever happened to her. Until now.

Friday evening Meg’s body, identified by her engagement ring, was one of a reported twenty skeletons uncovered next to the mysterious sinkhole formed seven days ago next to the Freedom Center.

Authorities have still refused to answer questions about how the sinkhole formed, why they have covered it with a tent, and why area residents have reported hearing terrified screams and moans, and in one case, been attacked by an unidentified wild animal. Four teenagers last seen around the site also remain missing.

In the meantime, there is talk that Chronicles of the Cursed, Tribune Media Group’s haunted house, will still go on. For updated information on the site’s happenings, please visit cursedchicago.com
