Horror Down Below

Scared and Scarred. Fresh claw marks from ... what?
Freedom Center workers demand answers

Danielle Fairbanks was working the night shift on the 500 block of West Grand Avenue when she heard screams outside. She went to investigate. “That’s when it attacked me," Danielle told reporters as she lifted her shirt, revealing four large claw marks still covered in blood. “They say they’re bear claws but that was no bear. It was human. Or partly human.”

Danielle somehow managed to escape, but she fears for her coworkers. “They aren’t safe. No one is. Something’s going on down there, but they won’t tell us what it is. “

Chicago Tribune Freedom Center workers have reported a rash of frightening sounds and strange sights since the sinkhole was discovered last week next to their parking lot. Also, four teenagers have been reported missing, as have dozens of pets.

“It was just a wild animal,” says a source close to the investigation. “We’ve instructed all Freedom Center employees to stay inside during their breaks, but there is nothing to be alarmed about. We have guards patrolling the premises around the clock. It is a safe work environment.”

However, some Freedom Center workers don’t buy that story. “A wild animal? No way,” scoffs printing press operator Susan Miller. “We hear screams all the time. And laughter. And disturbing smells of, I don’t know. It smells like death.”

The Freedom Center is the plant where the Tribune printing presses are located. The presses reach down to bedrock and for months, construction workers have been digging new tunnels to expand the basements to accommodate new machinery. Eight days ago all work suddenly stopped and crews evacuated the area. Representatives of the construction company refused to comment for this article.

Rumors circulate that Chronicles of the Cursed, a popular haunted house located at the site of the sinkhole is scheduled to open on October 8th, despite the chain of recent events. Official announcements in regards to the event have not been made, but distressed neighbors are concerned about the prospect.
