Neighbors want answers, officials stay silent

A frantic search continued into the night for four missing teenagers: Brina McBraid, 19, her sister Felicia McBraid, 17, and their cousins Anthony and Seymour Wallace, both 18. They were last seen around midnight near the sinkhole that appeared recently on the 500 block of West Grand Avenue.

“They wanted to get a closer look but I told them to stay away, it wasn’t safe,” said a sobbing Sally Wingwold, 22, a childhood friend who was with the group earlier in the evening. “But they wanted to see what the fuss was. It’s my fault. I should have talked them out of it.”

The teenagers allegedly climbed over a barrier surrounding the sinkhole. It is unclear how the teenagers got past the armed patrols that have been guarding the area.

“I just want my babies back!” cried 57-year old Margo McBraid, wailing from the steps of her home as family members tried to console her. “It’s that sinkhole. It’s taken them!”

Authorities are maintaining their silence on the origins of the sinkhole. This latest event is the most serious of a string of rumors that have erupted from the area since the sinkhole was first reported. Robert Smelic and Claudia Reins, employees at the Chicago Tribune Freedom Center who discovered the sinkhole, quit their positions suddenly and could not be found for comment.

“I’m not going near it,” said one employee who refused to give her name. “I’ve heard moaning and screaming from it, like someone’s being tortured. And I saw something, but I don’t what it was … I’m sorry, we’ve been told not to talk about it. I don’t know anything.”

Felix Monger, a lawyer from nearby North Carpenter Street, wants answers. “They won’t let us near it. They won’t talk to us. Meanwhile, my dog is missing. Lots of our pets are. There’s something in that hole. We’re not going to stop until they tell us what’s going on.” Monger is forming a group, Chicagoans Against Chronicles, and claims to have already collected 400 signatures to protest the lack of communication.

The name “Chicagoans Against Chronicles” was derived from Chronicles of the Cursed, a popular Haunted House located at the site of the sinkhole that is scheduled to open on October 8th. Organizers of Chronicles will not confirm reports they may start offering sinkhole tours.
